The Chiconcuac Hacienda is a place where the past lives on.
Its walls, courtyards, and gardens preserve the essence of its origins and the memory of generations, making it today a place where history and new stories meet to celebrate.
Beginnings of the Hacienda in the 16th Century
The Chiconcuac Hacienda dates back to the time of the conquest and the early years of the colonial period. It was built and inhabited by Martín Cortés, recognized as the son of Hernán Cortés and La Malinche, and was one of the first owners linked to the nobility and the colonial economy.
During this time it functioned as a sugar plantation, taking advantage of the fertile lands and hydraulics of the region to produce sugar and other goods derived from sugarcane.
Period of Growth and Consolidation
Over the years, the Chiconcuac Hacienda became established as an important production center in the region.
Its architecture was expanded with courtyards, gardens, aqueducts and production systems, becoming a representative example of New Spain haciendas and the colonial agricultural economy.
Relationship with historical figures of the 19th century
In the 19th century, the hacienda was acquired and inhabited by Doña Felicitas Juárez Maza, daughter of President Benito Juárez, which reinforces the connection of this place with important figures in the history of Mexico.
This stage marks the transition of the estate towards more residential and social uses, while also preserving its importance as a historical symbol.
Transformations and Partial Abandonment
Following the Agrarian Reform and the social changes that followed the Mexican Revolution — as happened with many haciendas in Mexico — large properties began to fragment and lost their original function as productive estates.
Many lands passed into the hands of ejido members or were sold, and the hacienda experienced a period of less productive activity and some deterioration of its main facilities.
Rescue, conservation and the present
In recent times, the Chiconcuac Hacienda has undergone a rescue and restoration process that has brought its walls, courtyards and gardens back to life.
Each space has been carefully preserved to maintain its historical essence and original architecture, respecting the character given to it by centuries of history.
Today, the hacienda remains a living place, where the past coexists with the present and becomes the setting for new stories, celebrations and encounters that continue to give meaning to its legacy.
